In July, The Heights Forum journeyed to Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts, to present at the Catholic Talent Project’s summer workshop for young Catholic teachers. The CTP hosts a five-week workshop for its St. Thomas More Teaching Fellows as part of their summer training heading into the school year. The fellowship program “exists to revitalize Catholic education by identifying, training, and forming young adults to serve as teachers in Catholic schools.”
Several members of The Heights faculty presented lectures to the eighty participants. Headmaster Alvaro de Vicente spoke on the Teaching Vocation, offering reflective questions to help in one’s self-examination and discernment of teaching as a professional vocation. Director of The Heights Forum, Nate Gadiano, addressed the workshop on the education of boys. He began the talk with a reminder that education cannot be reduced to “a formula or list of hacks,” but is more complex. Mr. Gadiano offered a framework of universally applicable ideas for each person to adapt to their own environment.
Head of Upper School Michael Moynihan spoke on “Teaching Sovereign Knowers,” emphasizing students’ freedom and how important it is to teach according to their nature. Director of Admissions Brendan Reagan talked to the attendees with more practical professional tips and reflection questions to help optimize professional patterns. Freshman Core and History of Western Thought teacher Austin Hatch engaged in seminar discussions on Thomas More’s pageant verses.
