Convivium offers educators a chance to ponder broad topics of contemporary cultural relevance that bear on their work. Like a retreat, it affords teachers the time to think deeply, to reflect sincerely—and to do both in an environment of friendship.
Nothing spurs thoughtful dialogue so much as good writing—thinking on its best behavior, as it has been aptly called. And perhaps no form of writing sparks thoughtful dialogue quite like the thought-provoking, exploratory prose of the traditional essay—a verbal attempt at the truth.
In advance of Convivium, each year the Forum calls for essays on the annual theme. Selected essays will be featured in the Convivium reader gifted to every participant. Our hope is that these essays will spark reflection, that such reflection will lead to conversation, and that such conversation will bring us all closer to the truth.
Please keep the following in mind as you write your essay:
- Essays must relate to this year’s theme, Friendship.
- The maximum word count is 1,500.
- Complete essays are due by August 14, 2026.
- You will be notified of your essay’s status by August 26, 2026.
- If applicable, copy edits will be returned for your review by September 1, 2026.
